Fibers and Dyeing Final Synthesis

The collection of work that I developed for the course is very much experimental. For the weekly assignments, I prioritized experimenting with techniques within my interest. Thus, I regret not being able to produce a cohesive body of work. Yet, I thoroughly enjoyed the process and was able to hone my fiber-spinning skill and experiment with a variety of dye recipes beyond what each assignment asked for.

During the last few weeks of the course, I discovered my fascination with the turquoise stock solution. I appreciated its unique ability to penetrate fabrics and introduce irregularities to a pleating pattern. Therefore, I decided to upscale one of my favorite resist dye recipes with turquoise MX dye on cotton fabric for my final project. Drawing inspiration from Issey Miyake’s 132 5 collection, which uses mathematical folding in apparel making, I used the natural pleating structure created by the resist technique to dictate where boning would be applied to give the garment structure. I experimented with cotton fabric of different thicknesses and transparency to create more exciting forms and visual effects. In the end, I am pleased to present a soft-sculptural shawl that organically wraps and abstracts the female body.
